Organised by the Business School, Division of
Languages, and the European Institute

                    GENERAL INFORMATION:
The reinforcement of regional identities and of the
institutions which support them, together with the fact
that Spain is a fully-fledged member of the European Union,
are challenging the concept of national identity and the
role of the nation-state. As a consequence of the diversity
of language policies being implemented by the Autonomous
Communities, whose minority languages would find their best
supporter in the “Europe of the Nations”, Spanish
linguistic and cultural identity is under scrutiny.

TARGET AUDIENCES AND AIMS OF THIS CONFERENCE:
This Conference is aimed at researchers, lecturers,
students and the general public with an interest in Spanish
language and regionalism, within the context of Europe. Our
main objectives are:

    - To provide a space for researchers to share their
views about the relationship between language and
    constructions of national identities.
    - To offer a debate and an evaluation on different
aspects of the linguistic, social and political
identities of Spain at the end of this Millennium.
    - To examine the extent to which cultural identity
is embodied in language, and the relationship
between cultural identities and the exercise of
    political power.
    - To offer an insight into the effect of linguistic
policies in the different Autonomous Communities
within the framework of the European Union.
