This is where the phonological level of the dispute comes in.  The
pronunciation is essentially vowel-less, but some argue that the syllabic
consonant is the surface manifestation of underlying <schwa>r or <schwa>l
and that this approach can thus be used orthographically, and also, where
these are needed, in dictionary pronunciation keys.
