Sorry Peter, I did not understand your "intent" with "abandon" here. In that
case, ACTOR [+intent] is what distinguishes "abandon" from the near synonym
"desert" with ACTOR [+/-intent]. So you can alternate these near synonyms in
"My pet cockroach abandoned/deserted me" but not in "My courage
*abandoned/deserted me". On the other hand, you could have a relationship
with your pet cockroach but not with your courage.
