In Carrier, there are distinct words for the flesh of fish -yat
and the flesh of animals and birds -utsung (Stuart/Trembleur Lake
dialect pronounciations.) On the other hand, there is no word
for "meat" per se. The basic meaning of both words
is "flesh", and when possessed in the ordinary way they denote
the flesh on the body of the possessor. To mean "meat" they have
to be given the special inflection used for alienable possession
of inalienably possessed nouns. Thus, ootsung is "its flesh (on its
body)" while be'utsung is "his meat" (e.g. that he is cooking).
