Mike,

Here is an example. As an American you might know the "Hogan's Heroes"
series making fun
of Nazi soldiers, the Americans being the smart ones and the Germans the
dummies. I saw
them about thirty years ago in the States and found them hilariously funny,
because they
were so exaggerated. I don't remember what was done in English to make
Colonel Klink sound
like a Prussian officer bellowing commands. Maybe an occasional "Achtung!"
or "Still gestanden!
 said in German. But I do remember how "Hogan's Heroes" came across in
Germany a few
 years ago. In the first version all the characters speak high German which
did not make the
 series sell. However, when Colonel Klink speaks Schwäbisch and Sergeant
Shultz speaks
 Bavarian that made all the difference. The series was a roaring success!
Those who know the
difference between the two dialects in German and have seen the series will
immediately
understand. ;-)

I've seen several movies dubbed into English where actors were given
accents; Das Boat stands out as a very good example.  Do people ever
speak with accents in dubbed-in movies in other languages?
