[Lexicog] Making verbs alphabetize correctly in an English to Karuk finderlist

One reason I put "to" in the reversal fields is based on what comes out in
the display program I use. I use Lexique Pro to display my data on the
computer and the web. Neither English index of my language (the one for the
computer display or the one for the web) can display the part of speech
(that I can see anyway). Having "to" in the index helps the user to know if
an entry in the index is a noun or a verb. Otherwise, there is no way to
know that without first clicking on the index entry. Wouldn't this be good
to have in the index? Maybe it isn't needed, but I thought it would be good
to have.

 

Before leaving "to" off, I would make sure your display program does do what
you want it to do and that you are happy with what is displayed. And I could
be missing something in Lexique Pro that would allow me to display the part
of speech in the indexes. I haven't found it, though.

How about something like this?

 

\ge get_sick

\re sick (to get)

\de to get sick

 

\ge be_exhausted

\re exhausted (to be)

\de to be exhausted

 

\ge be_completely_exhausted

\re exhausted (to be completely)

\de to be completely exhausted

 

If you want, you could also include something like \re be completely
exhausted (to) in the index, in case someone will look up the verb under
"be..." The record would then be

 

\ge be_completely_exhausted

\re exhausted (to be completely) ; be completely exhausted (to)

\de to be completely exhausted

 

And if you really want to cover all your bases, you could do this:

 

\ge be_completely_exhausted

\re exhausted (to be completely) ; be completely exhausted (to) ; completely
exhausted (to be)

\de to be completely exhausted

 

You haven't even added synonyms yet of exhausted into the \re field, e.g.,
to be wiped out, to be dead tired, but you might not want to go that far.

I'm working on the second edition of the Karuk Dictionary, and one of the
suggestions that came out of the Karuk Dictionary Advisory Group was to
address the clump of verbs that is stuck in the "be ___" section of the
English-Karuk finderlist.

We're using Shoebox for Mac, though once I get my license for Office 2003
for Windows, we're moving over to Toolbox for Windows.  

I knew how to avoid clumping verbs at the "to _____" section of the
English-Karuk, so the verb "bend" is between "Ben Wilder" and "beneath".

But I wasn't sure what to do with verbs that translate as "be ____", such as
"be a year" "be exhausted" "be completely exhausted" "be sober", "be thin"
and "be very thin" "be sick" and "get sick"

What would you do with those verbs?

What would you put in the \ge \re and \de fields?
