[Lexicog] Tools to help us much: Fieldworks, WeSay and LexiquePro

There is a fair amount of stuff on the internet about “semantic domains.”
But almost all of it is very technical jargon related to internet search
engines. I have never been able to gain anything from it, which is
unfortunate. I believe they are attempting to make it possible for a person
to search for a word, but be directed to a site that has something to do
with the topic. This would make search engines “smarter” than just a pattern
matching algorithm. For instance if someone did a search for “lexicographer”
and there were no good matches, the search engine could redirect the search
to “lexicography” or “dictionary”. But I’m not really sure what their
purpose is.

By the way, I have not attempted to include a lot of specialized terminology
or technical jargon in the DDP list. The reason is that the primary purpose
of the DDP domains is to collect (and classify) the words of minority
languages. Most such languages do not deal with highly technical fields such
as ICT. ICT is dominated by English and a few other world class languages. I
suspect that computers, cell phones, and other high-tech devices will
continue to be used by more and more people, including people who speak
minority languages. These people will develop (or borrow) technical terms in
their own languages for words like “email” “text” “file” “voicemail” etc.
Perhaps I should add a domain for such words, but I haven’t yet. If you are
seeing such words in your language, let me know.

Hi Ron,

I am glad to hear from you. I am waiting for DDP version 5 impatiently.
Regarding the abbreviation ICT, I wanted to talk about Information and
Communication Technology and other related fields. With new technologies, a
'flood' of words is confusing us. We need a way of ordering/classifying
them.

Thanks,

Emmanuel Habumuremyi

I’m currently working on DDP version 5 and I’m looking for suggestions on
how to improve the list of semantic domains. Could you tell me what ICT is?
I’m not familiar with the abbreviation.

Thanks,

Ron Moe

Dear members of the group,

I am very happy to wish you a prosperous year. Allow me to tell you what I
noticed in the new testing release of the software mentioned in the Subject.
Starting by Fieldworks, this is really a tool which responds to the
linguist's need of collecting and organizing data to be retrieved at the
right time. For me it is "All in One" tool.

As far as LexiquePro is concerned, I have not much to say since it speaks by
itself. Basing on its current test version, the feature of searching words
based on their PoS pleased me and helped in correcting some mistakes in my
database.

Concerning WeSay, I am afraid it is going to replace all other tools we are
using since it is integrating all our needs in word collection! This is not
a dramatization. The fact that one can look at his/her work in LexiquePro
without quitting WeSay, making a PDF Dictionary in very few seconds, and
exporting Fieldwoks dictionary data in LIFT which is compatible with WeSay
encourage me in my work. Even though WeSay is its in early stage of
development, and improvement is needed for some features, this is a tool for
our future linguistic carrier.

Let's close my message with admirable Semantic Domains by Ron. I hope a new
version with current concepts like the ones in ICT will be out soon.

Try these tools, you will tell me.
