Just a fortnight before a new law requiring that 60% of the school
curriculum in Latvia be taught in Latvian, the parliamentary group Human
Rights in United Latvia is seeking to amend the law.

An open letter has been sent this week to the abbess of the convent St.
Marienstern in Upper Lusatia protesting against the prohibition of Sorbian
at one of the convent's home for disabled.
FIRST BASQUE TELEVISION STATION ONLINE

The first Basque television station broadcast on the internet,
www.euskaraz.tv, has been set up by the company Grupo Proyeccíon based in
Bilbao. The station broadcasts all programmes in Basque, with the aim of
promoting the language over the world wide web.
GERMAN MINORITY STRUGGLES NOT TO BE DROWNED IN NEW WAVE OF REFORM

The Danish government is currently drafting a major structural reform of
municipalities. The aim is to build larger entities. However, this will
weaken the political representation of the German minority in southern
Denmark. The Germans are requesting guarantees for continued influence in
any new structure.

Estonia presented its second report on the FCNM in July. In comparison
with the first report, the second one is more detailed. These improvements
may be connected with a list of important questions sent in by the
Consulting Committee. However, the Government continues to reduce almost
all problems of national minority integration to Estonian language
training of non-Estonians.
