WHO: Joseph Danks, Director of Research at the University of Maryland Center
for Advanced Study of Language (CASL), scholar, author and dean emeritus of
the College of Arts and Sciences at Kent State University.

WHAT: CASL Research Projects on Language Learning and Cultural Understanding
presentation at the 2007 Interagency Language Roundtable Showcase: Advances
in Language Learning and Cultural Understanding

WHEN: June 15, 2007 at 4pm (CASL exhibit in the Grand Ballroom from 8:30 am
– 4:30 pm)

WHERE: George Washington University's Marvin Center Auditorium

CASL has several research projects on adult language learning and the use of
cultural knowledge in government work. Dr. Danks' presentation will describe
the following projects, drawing specific application to the work of various
government agencies:

• The Linguistic Correlates of Proficiency project – aimed at improving the
teaching, learning and testing of high-level listening and speaking
abilities in critical foreign languages (Arabic, Korean, Persian, and
Russian).

• Another project will provide a thick description of the language-learning
environment of military linguists in the Defense Language Institute Foreign
Language Center (DLIFLC) Basic Course, paying special attention to the role
of class size and technology use in class and in self-study assignments.

• The Hi-Level Language Aptitude Battery project will develop a test that
predicts successful language learning by adults, particularly learning of
difficult languages, and particularly to very advanced proficiency.

• The Cultural Skills Guide project will bring into immediate use language
and cultural resources to support operational needs for U.S. Military
Attachés.

The ILR members will present on the themes of: language policy issues,
translation and interpretation, training/enhancing four skills proficiency,
assessment, technology/distance education and other relevant research
