BANGALORE: The Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajashekharan has
said that the Union Government will accord the much-awaited classical
language status to Kannada shortly. He told presspersons here on Monday that
Kannada should have been accorded classical language status by now. Although
he had made personal requests, some Tamil Nadu MPs in the Parliament
preferred to play politics over the issue. However, the issue would be
sorted out soon, he added.

The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development had constituted an expert
committee on languages to look into the eligibility details for conferring
the classical language status on Kannada. The Director of the Mysore-based
Central Institute of Indian Languages and a member of the expert committee
Udaya Narayana Singh had forwarded his report to the Centre in June 2006. He
had discussed the issue with the Union Minister for Urban Development S.
Jaipal Reddy and sought his cooperation in the issue. Mr. Reddy was positive
in his response, he said.

He had also briefed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the over
2,000-year-old Kannada language and its literary and cultural achievements.
He had even drawn the attention of the Prime Minister to Mr. Narayana
Singh's comprehensive report that noted that the Kannada language had
fulfilled all the four criteria set for the purpose, Mr. Rajashekharan said.
He added that he was hopeful that the Centre would accord the status to
Kannada as a Suvarna Karnataka gift by November.
