Tulu academy started in Kasaragod

KASARAGOD: The long struggle of Tulu-speaking people in and around
Kasaragod was met on Monday when Kerala Chief Minister V.S.
Achuthanandan dedicated the Kerala Tulu Academy to public at a
function at Hosangadi, here. The function was held on Koti-Chennaya
Stage, Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Nagar. The academy will help Tulu-
speaking people preserve their culture and language. Mr. Achuthanandan
said the newly formed academy should work in tandem with the Tulu
Academy in Karnataka which had been functioning for the last ten
years. Mr. Achuthanandan's speech that began with greetings in Tulu
was received with thunderous applause by hundreds of people. He said,
his Government would explore on what could be done to encourage the
language and revive its literature, jointly with Government of
Karnataka. The Tulu script which had been perceived as lost had been
rediscovered. He said the office of the newly formed academy would
function at Rashtrakavi Govinda Pai Government College, Manjeswar, for
the time being. Kerala Government had allocated Rs. 20 lakh for the
academy.

The Government would allocate more funds, he said. B. Nagaraja Shetty,
Karnataka Minister for Fisheries, and former Karnataka Chief Minister
Veerappa Moily spoke. Doyen of Tulu literature Kayyara Kinhanna Rai;
Kannada professor of Mangalore University K. Chinnappa Gowda were
present.
