Experts point at importance of saving of Lithuanian language

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 22.09.2008.

Special importance should be paid to policy relating to safeguard of
Lithuanian language, the Radio Vilnius quoted the Chairperson of the
State Commission for Lithuanian Language Irena Smetonienë. The issue
was considered thoroughly during international conference on native
language policy, taking place in Vilnius. Some specialists in
Lithuania fear that penetration of English language threatens the
Lithuanian language.

However, in the opinion of language specialists from the European
Union, native language policy model, chosen by Lithuania, is effective
and will allow the preservation of Lithuanian language. A counterpart
of Lithuanian language specialists – a Chairperson of the State
Commission of Estonian Language, Tartu University Vice-Chancellor
Birute Klas emphasised that it is important for citizens of small
countries to learn not only English, but also other languages.
