Constitutional: Date set for school language appeal bid

The schools language issue continues to simmer, with a Beeld report
noting Chief Justice Pius Langa has instructed the parties in the
Hoërskool Ermelo case to present verbal arguments on the matter to the
Constitutional Court on 20 August. The provincial Department of
Education and Education Minister have applied for leave to appeal
after five appeal judges ruled in favour of the formerly
Afrikaans-medium school. The SCA judges held that the language
policies of schools were the exclusive prerogative of their respective
governing bodies. The high school in Ermelo began legal action after
it was forced to incorporate English classes.
