French Language: NFLV charges governors, dons on policy implementation
By Segun Olugbile, Published: Monday, 5 Apr 2010

The Director-General, Nigerian French Language Village, Badagry, Prof.
Sam Aje, has called on state governors and designers of teaching
methodology for the teaching of foreign language to work harder at
ensuring the success of French Language policy in the country. Aje
said this at the closing ceremony of the regional network meeting of
operators of French Language Immersion Programme from the West African
sub-region hosted by the NFLV in Badagry on Thursday. The meeting,
which started on March 28, ended on April 2. According to him, state
governors have a lot of things to do if the nation‘s desire to adopt
French as the second official language must become a reality.

He said, ”The Federal Government has given a directive that French
should be a compulsory subject in the nation‘s secondary schools
nationwide and it is only the state governors who can help in carrying
out the directive.” He also said that state governments could advance
this course by investing in training and retraining of French Language
teachers in their states. Aje, however, noted that only Kaduna State
had carried out the directive by the National Council on Education to
send their French teachers for training at NFLV for further training.
The NFLV boss said that the regional meeting was held to strategise on
how to improve the learning of French Language in West Africa through
the development of teaching and research methodology for the language.
He added that the meeting also focused on the activities lined up for
the year and had also determined budget for some of the events.

Aje, who said that the meeting agreed that the language immersion
programme in the West African sub-region had been successful, called
for the continued support of the French Embassy. Responding,
Counsellor for Co-operation and Culture, French Embassy, Abuja,
Mr.Jean Pierre Gay, expressed the readiness of France to continue to
support any effort aimed at the development of the language in the
zone. He said, ”The Embassy has been supporting French teaching in
the NFLV through technical expertise and training of French teachers.
We will continue to do that and even more.” Gay reiterated the
centrality of French Language to socio-economic development in the
West African sub-region and called on governments of the nations in
the zone to encourage the learning of the language in their countries.

The network meeting was attended by delegates from countries such as
Ghana, Benin Republic, Togo, Nigeria and French Embassy, Abuja.
