CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
DEADLINE: May 15, 2010
Description of Types of Presentations
Academic Demonstration (50 minutes). An academic presentation is used for
showing, rather than telling, a technique for teaching or testing.
Academic In-Progress Research Report (25 minutes). An opportunity for
graduate students, administrators, teacher trainers, classroom teachers, or
any other interested persons to report on research, programs, textbooks or
techniques that are "in progress" and to meet others interested in the
topic. Two in-progress reports will be programmed within the same 50-minute
block. Each talk should be no longer than 20 minutes with an additional 5
minutes for questions.
Academic Paper (50 minutes). An oral summary. The presenter discusses and
describes something the presenter is doing or has done in relation to either
theory or practice. The presenter often has handouts and may also use
audiovisual aids.
Academic Workshop (1 hour 20 minutes). Very little lecturing by the leader;
the emphasis is, rather, on the participants' activity, which is carefully
structured by the leader. The leader works with a group, helping
participants solve a problem or develop a specific teaching or research
technique.
Poster Session (1 hour). A poster session allows for short, informal
discussions with other participants during the time period that the
self-explanatory exhibit is on display. The exhibit is presented on a large
(120 cm wide x 150 cm high--approximately 4 feet wide x 5 feet high) display
board that includes a title; the name and institutional affiliation of the
presenter(s); and a brief text with clearly labeled photos, drawings,
graphs, or charts. The poster should not be just a collection of individual
sheets of paper taped onto the display board. The title of the poster must
coincide with the title submitted in the Call for Participation. The poster
session must not promote commercial interests. The presenter is responsible
for setting up and dismantling the poster at the times designated by the
Program Committee. Also, presenters must be on site with their posters
during the designated time that the poster session takes place.
Exhibitor's Session (50 minutes). These are presentations by book
publishers, authors, editors, distributors, manufacturers, and others whose
goods or services have significance for EFL/ESL students and educators.

Call for papers
Deadline for submission - Tuesday 4th May 2010
We live in a world containing a myriad of different cultures, where clear
and effective communication is increasingly important in international
cultural, economic, political and social relations, and where facility with
foreign languages can have a major impact upon the success of a business, an
individual, or a nation. Papers are, therefore, sought for a conference
entitled Languages for the 21st Century: Training, Impact and Influence
(University of Sheffield, UK; 1-2 September 2010), aimed at show-casing new
training provision, techniques, technologies, methodologies and research in
language teaching, with an emphasis on the advanced, or research-focussed
learner. The main focus of the conference will be on the Languages of the
Wider World: Africa, East and South Asia, Russia, Central Europe, and the
Arab world, but contributions on other areas are also welcomed.
Major conference themes will be:
* Assessment: methodologies and comparisons
* Benchmarking: standards for higher study
* Cultural Competence: teaching text, discourse, rhetoric and skills
* Generational Change: new approaches for the information age
* Language for Research: training for the social sciences and humanities
* Materials and Curriculum Development: from ab initio to advanced, from
paper to screen
* Outreach: training the policy or business learner
* Research in a global context
But papers in other areas will also be considered. Papers may be either
traditional research presentations, reports on new approaches and
developments, or practical demonstrations. Proposals for workshop sessions,
likely to be of use to both teachers and students, or entire panels are also
welcomed.
The conference is jointly organised and supported by the five UK Centres of
Excellence in Language-based Area Studies (White Rose East Asia Centre,
British Inter-University China Centre, Centre for the Advanced Study of the
Arab World, Centre for East European Language-Based Area Studies, Centre for
Russian, Central and East European Studies), the Subject Centre for
Language, Linguistics and Area Studies, and the Languages of the Wider World
Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
