Centre for Applied Language Studies: Language policy and language testing
The project to update language education policies in Finland (KIEPO),
in which CALS plays a major role, includes language testing and
assessment as one of its thematic areas. The current situation is
charted in the project, problem areas are identified and
recommendations for reforms in the future are made.
Research and development work in the National Certificate of Language
Proficiency is also linked to language policy, in particular because
passing the tests of Finnish or Swedish in this examination is the
most common way for immigrants who apply for Finnish citizenship to
demonstrate an adequate command of one of the national languages of
the country.
