UCR study finds that DVDs don't help babies learn language

Educational DVDs aimed at teaching language to very young children
cannot replace human interaction -- the most effective way that babies
learn, according to a UC Riverside study.

Researchers who followed 96 babies, ages 12 to 24 months, found no
evidence that the children learned words from such videos, said the
lead author, Rebekah Richert, assistant professor of psychology.

More aid urged for private Chinese teaching

Teaching Chinese language to foreigners, a prime aspect of culture
exports so far dominated by public institutions, should be open to
private sectors as well, because they would be less prone to attacks
from culture protection radicals, a political advisor told Xinhua.

Cherokee Nation creates syllabary keypad

In an ongoing effort to strengthen the use of the Cherokee language,
the Cherokee Nation has developed a unique keypad that allows the user
to more easily type in the Cherokee syllabary instead of using the
Latin alphabet that is standard to modern computer keyboards.

The special keypad is made of thin black silicone, and fits over the
top of a regular computer keyboard.

Students, professors fight foreign language class cuts

Students and professors alike rallied in front of the humanities
building at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday, Feb. 24 in an effort to
raise awareness about classes - in particular, foreign language - that
are being cut from the school.

The programs that are in danger of being discontinued are master's and
bachelor's degrees in French; master's, bachelor's and minors in
German; and a minor in Portuguese. If these programs are done away
with, majors such as International business in French, German, and
Portuguese will have to be canceled as well.
