Meeting Description:
The Symposium will bring together representatives from plurilingual
Canadian and European cities. Keynote speakers include Graham Fraser,
Commissioner of Official Languages, and Colin Williams of the School
of Welsh at Cardiff University. The City of Ottawa will act as host
city. In addition, representatives from Moncton, Brussels, Helsinki,
Biel/Bienne and Barcelona are presenting. For each city, there will be
one administrator and one university scholar as speaker or panellist.
Objectives:
-Initiate a dialogue at the municipal level to share the experiences
of bilingual cities as they relate to language planning.
-Discuss practices that contribute to the appreciation and promotion
of the language of communities in a minority environment.
-Explore the advantages and the challenges of urban bilingualism on
the economic development, human welfare and inter-group relations.
-Lay the foundations of a network of experts and practitioners on the
bilingual situation of capital and urban environments.
