Dear All,
Erin Callahan-Price (no relation) is a PhD student in Linguistics here at
Duke, and she has been using multimedia techniques to teach a
sociolinguistics class called 'Varieties of Language'. The Center for
Instructional Technology highlighted her work earlier this year:

If, like me, you've ever tried to integrate technology into linguistics
pedagogy and ended up with mixed (or downright clumsy) results, then this is
an excellent how-to guide to doing it well.
One of the things Erin noted from using this kind of approach was how
students were able to articulate *why* they were studying linguistics -
prospective dentists were interested in phonetics, while prospective
pre-meds were interested in discourse analysis of doctor/patient
interactions, etc. - which isn't perhaps as obvious (or as easy to glean)
from more traditional pedagogical approaches or assessment methods.
For me, this is useful both for students and faculty, because students get
the opportunity to voluntarily describe their motivations, and faculty are
able to respond to and engage with these from a 'what works' pedagogical
perspective.
Erin's email is erinecallahan at gmail.com
Best,
Gareth
