*AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY GRANTS*
Dear James,
The American Philosophical Society requested we share the following
information about
grants. They are mainly for scholars and students in graduate levels. We
hope this information is helpful to many of you.
Indigenous Language Institute
August 2012
------------------------------
*Phillips Fund for Native American Research*
*Scope*
The Phillips Fund of the American Philosophical Society provides grants for
research in Native American linguistics, ethnohistory, and the history of
studies of Native Americans, in the continental United States and Canada.
Grants are not made for projects in archaeology, ethnography,
psycholinguistics,
or for the preparation of pedagogical materials. The committee
distinguishes ethnohistory from contemporary ethnography as the study of
cultures and culture change through time. The grants are intended for such
costs as travel, tapes, films, and consultants' fees but not for the
purchase of books or permanent equipment.
*Eligibility*
The committee prefers to support the work of younger scholars who have
received the doctorate. Applications are also accepted from graduate
students for research on master’s theses or doctoral dissertations.
The committee sometimes approves two awards to the same person within a
five-year period.
*Award and Duration*
The average award is about $2,500; grants do not exceed $3,500. Grants are
given for one year following the date of the award. Grants are taxable
income, but the Society is not required to report payments. It is recommended
that grant recipients discuss their reporting obligations with their tax
advisors.
*Deadline and Notification*
Applications and letters of support are due by *March 1*. It is the
applicant's responsibility to verify that all materials, including the two
required letters, reached the Society on time; send an email inquiry to
Linda Musumeci, Director of Grants and Fellowships, at
LMusumeci at amphilsoc.org or call 215-440-3429. Notification is sent in May.
*Requirements*
Recipients of awards are expected to provide the American Philosophical
Society Library with a brief formal report and copies of any tape recordings,
transcriptions, microfilms, etc., acquired in the process of the grant-funded
research. The materials will be made available to scholars using the
Library’s collections.
*Application*
Access to the application portal is available at
www.amphilsoc.org/grants/phillips<http://e2ma.net/go/11102731880/208945984/234740693/28751/goto:http://www.amphilsoc.org/grants/phillips>
------------------------------
*The Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research*
*Scope *
The Lewis and Clark Fund (initially supported by the Stanford
Ascherman/Baruch Blumberg Fund for Basic Science, established by a benefaction
from the late Stanford Ascherman, MD, of San Francisco) encourages exploratory
field studies for the collection of specimens and data and to provide the
imaginative stimulus that accompanies direct observation.
Applications are invited from disciplines with a large dependence on
field studies,
such as archeology, anthropology, biology, ecology, geography, geology,
linguistics, paleontology, and population genetics, but grants will not be
restricted to these fields.
*Eligibility*
*Grants will be available to doctoral students.* Postdoctoral fellows,
master’s degree
candidates, and undergraduates are not eligible. Applicants who have
previously received a Lewis and Clark Fund grant may reapply after an
interval of two years. Preference is given to applicants who have not yet
been granted an award from the Fund.
Applicants should ask their academic advisor to write one of the two
letters of recommendation, specifying the student’s qualifications to carry
out the proposed work and the educational content of the trip. Budgets should
be limited to travel and related expenses, including personal field
equipment.
Proposals that are archival in nature or museum based will not normally be
considered. The proposed work should be dissertation directed to the extent
possible given the applicant’s year in the doctoral program.
The competition is open to U.S. citizens and residents wishing to carry out
research anywhere in the world. Foreign applicants must either be based at
a U.S. institution or plan to carry out their work in the United States.
When appropriate, the applicant should provide assurances that safety
measures will be taken for potentially hazardous projects. When necessary,
the applicant and his or her supervisor should discuss the field training
that will be provided and the provisions for experienced supervision. Funding
is contingent on successful applicants demonstrating that required permits
and permissions have been secured.
*Awards*
Amounts will depend on travel costs but will ordinarily be in the range of
several hundred dollars up to about $5,000. Grants are payable to the
individual applicant. Lewis and Clark Fund grants are taxable income, but
the Society is not required to report payments. It is recommended that grant
recipients discuss their reporting obligations with their tax advisors.
*Deadlines*
*Application: February 1*, with notification in May, for work in June and
beyond.
*Letters of support: January 28*
It is the applicant’s responsibility to verify that all materials,
including the required two letters of support, have reached the Society on
time; contact Linda Musumeci, Director of Grants and Fellowships, at
LMusumeci at amphilsoc.org or 215-440-3429.
*Requirements*
Each Lewis and Clark Field Scholar will submit a brief report on his or her
trip for archiving in the APS Library. Instructions will be provided with
notification of an award.
*Application*

*Franklin Research Grants*
*Scope*
Since 1933, the American Philosophical Society has awarded small grants to
scholars in order to support the cost of research leading to publication in
all areas of knowledge. In 2011–2012 the Franklin Research Grants program
awarded nearly $380,000 to 77 scholars, and the Society expects to make a
similar number of awards in this year’s competition. The Franklin program
is particularly designed to help meet the costs of travel to libraries and
archives for research purposes; the purchase of microfilm,
photocopies, or equivalent
research materials; the costs associated with fieldwork; or
laboratory research expenses.
Franklin grants are made for noncommercial research. They are not intended
to meet the expenses of attending conferences or the costs of publication.
The Society does not pay overhead or indirect costs to any institution.
Grants will not be made to replace salary during a leave of absence or
earnings from summer teaching; pay living expenses while working at home;
cover the costs of consultants or research assistants; or purchase permanent
equipment such as computers, cameras, tape recorders, or laboratory
apparatus.
*Eligibility*
Applicants are expected to have a doctorate or to have published work of
doctoral character and quality. Ph.D. candidates are not eligible to apply,
but the Society is particularly interested in supporting the work of young
scholars who have recently received the doctorate. Independent scholars and
faculty members at all four-year and two-year research and non-research
institutions are welcome to apply provided that all eligibility guidelines
are met. American citizens and residents of the United States may
use their Franklin awards at home or abroad. Foreign nationals not
affiliated with a U.S. institution must use their Franklin awards for
research in the United States. Applicants who have previously received a
Franklin grant may reapply after an interval of two years.
*Awards*
Funding is offered up to a maximum of $6,000 for use in calendar year 2013.
Grants are not retroactive.
Grants are payable to the individual applicant. Franklin grants are taxable
income, but the Society is not required to report payments. It is
recommended that grant recipients discuss their reporting obligations with
their tax advisors.
*Deadlines*
For applications and two letters of support:
*October 1, 2012*, for a January 2013 decision for work in February through
December
*December 3, 2012*, for a March 2013 decision for work in April through
December
It is the applicant’s responsibility to verify that all materials,
including the required two letters of support, reached the Society on time;
contact Linda Musumeci, Director of Grants and Fellowships, at
LMusumeci at amphilsoc.org or 215-440-3429.
*Requirements*
Reports are due no later than one month after completion of the work for
which the award was made. Instructions will be provided with notification
of an award.
