The Ukrainian Communist Party will not support any amendments to the
country's language policy, Communist Party leader Petro Symonenko has
said.
While commenting to journalists in Novohrad-Volynsky, Zhytomyr region,
on possible amendments to the language law in terms of increasing the
percentage of the population who can claim the need for the approval
of a regional language from 10% to 30%, he said that the law was aimed
at contradictions in society. He noted that by adopting this law in
parliament, lawmakers had met the requirements of the European Charter
for Regional or Minority Languages.
"But this law does not solve the problem of the Russian language," the
party's press service quoted Symonenko as saying.
He added that politicians are thus trying to divert attention from
what is really happening in the country. He said he was sure that
changing the law would escalate the situation in the regions.
