Language Acquisition in Bilingual and Atypical Populations: Focus on
Developmental Comparisons
Guest-Edited by Tania Ionin

This Special Issue investigates the theoretical mechanisms behind language
development in different populations, addressing such empirical research
questions as:
• How does age affect linguistic development?
• Is cross-linguistic transfer attested for different types of populations,
such as simultaneous vs. sequential bilinguals?
• Is there a critical period for language acquisition, and does it affect
development as well as ultimate attainment?
• What are the relative contributions of cognitive vs. linguistic maturity
in the development of children with SLI, cognitive impairments or autism?
• Is the source of language difficulty or language breakdown different
across populations?
