All:

I would like to call your attention to 2 articles in the most recent number
of Language in Society (Vol. 43, No. 1, February 2014). The first is by
Massimo Cerruti & Riccardo Regis, entitled "Standardization patterns and
dialect/standard convergence: a northwestern Italian perspective." This
article will be of interest to those of you interested in language policy
as it applies to dialect(s), "substandard" language and dialect, diglossia,
"standard" languages, and everything in between. It attempts to deal with
the incredible variety of language(s) spoken both in nortwestern Italy and
in adjacent areas of France, and how standard French and standard Italian
affect other speech forms, and vice-versa.

The other article is a review of Nigel Armstrong & Ian Mackenzie's
*Standardization,
ideology and linguistics *by T. P. Bonfiglio, which addresses many of the
same issues.
