*"Leaders from all sectors are expected to take responsibility for the
Welsh language" says First Minister Carwyn Jones on 17 June 2014.*
The first minister was making a statement on the Welsh Language policy when
it considered the document TAN 20 which was published in its new form in
the autumn of last year.
TAN 20 sets out how the Welsh language should be considered in local
development plans.
New guidelines were published today to help local authorities to do this
and these will be distributed to local authorities.
The first minister said "here, in the government, we accept our part in the
challenge and we call on our partners across Wales to do the same."
The Labour member Keith Davies asked the first minister whether he agreed
there is a need on emphasis "outside of school" because children do not
make enough use of the Welsh language outside school boundaries.
The first minister replied that one way forward is that "businesses see
more value for the Welsh."
The Plaid Cymru member Simon Thomas said he was "disappointed the statement
today will lead to a further draft consultation" however, he added there is
"more meat than we have seen before."
The first minister announced that he had set aside £ 1.6 million over the
next two years to strengthen the links between the Welsh language and the
economy and create more opportunity for people to use everyday language.
