Good one, Bill--I spent 3 months there on a Fulbright and gradually learned
some of the lingo. Once I criticized a taxi driver for taking me on a
tangent when I thought he should go left. "Also can this side, lah!" he
answered. Later I even found a t-shirt for sale with the words "How to use
the lah" printed on it, with some examples. Lah is hard to translate, but
used in almost every sentence to "soften" any harshness.
