Subject: Re: [lg policy] Map of second most-spoken languages in the world

Displaying each country's second most-spoken language is an excellent idea.
Unfortunately, in this instance, the results are marred by a flawed
methodology and unreliable data.

Among the most flagrant problems is the confusion between spoken language,
mother tongue and official language.

For example, although French is Canada's second most-spoken language, the
map mistakenly lists Chinese. French is excluded, we are told, because it
is an official language. Yet French is listed as Switzerland's second
most-spoken language even though, here too, it is an official language.
