[lg policy] Fwd: Auto-discard notification

Thank you, Ed. I agree. The data from which the maps were made is also suspect. For example, according to this map, Sami is the second most spoken language in Finland (at 0.2% of the population!), if you don’t count Swedish. Yet it seems that speakers of 14 different languages place under Swedish but over Sami in Finland. (You can play around with that here: http://pxweb2.stat.fi/database/StatFin/vrm/vaerak/vaerak_en.asp). Apparently there are more speakers of Spanish than Sami in Finland! So, the idea is great, but the execution seems unreliable.

Cheers!

Gabriel

Displaying each country's second most-spoken language is an excellent idea. Unfortunately, in this instance, the results are marred by a flawed methodology and unreliable data.

Among the most flagrant problems is the confusion between spoken language, mother tongue and official language.

For example, although French is Canada's second most-spoken language, the map mistakenly lists Chinese. French is excluded, we are told, because it is an official language. Yet French is listed as Switzerland's second most-spoken language even though, here too, it is an official language.

Here's an interesting site: a link to a map of the second most-spoken languages in the world.
