English-medium tag for 649 schools
inShare
As many as 649 of the total 926 schools in Bengaluru and Mysuru divisions
have been given the English-medium tag.
This includes schools that were established after 1994, when the government
stopped recognising English-medium schools as it formulated the language
policy mandating that the medium of instruction should be in the child’s
mother tongue or the regional language.
Following the Supreme Court order that quashed the language policy, the
High Court of Karnataka had set May 20 as the deadline for the State
government to grant English-medium status to all existing schools, which
have been imparting education in English from classes 1 to 5 since 1994.
Sources in the department said files pertaining to the remaining 277
schools were sent to the Deputy Directors of Public Instruction (DDPI) for
clarifications. They also said that the decision on sanctioning permission
for new English-medium schools were yet to be processed.
D. Shashi Kumar, General Secretary of the Associated Managements of Primary
and Secondary Schools in Karnataka, urged the Department of Public
Instruction to now sanction permission for classes 6 to 8 as well, which
has been rejected citing the language policy.
“Many schools are branded unauthorised for not having permission to run
upper primary as the department has not considered their proposals to run
English-medium classes,” he said.
