A language is not static. When new technologies come it, it shakes up the
language.

Just like how the spoken language deteriorated with the arrival of written
language and like how metre and rhyme just got restricted to be
embellishments of a language, changes do disturb the structure of a
language, said K.V. Thomas, noted academician.

Speaking on the ‘power and weaknesses of language in social media’ at a
programme organised by the Bhasha Samanvaya Vedi in association with the
District Information Office on the occasion of ‘Classical Language Day’ in
Kozhikode on Sunday, Prof. Thomas said that a political will was necessary
in the State to form a language policy.

*Golden jubilee*

The golden jubilee of poet G.Sankarakurup obtaining Jnanpith award was also
celebrated on the occasion.

Speaking on the ‘Indian scenarios in the poems of G.Sankara Kurup’, noted
writer Arsu, said that G. Sankara Kurup had marked the grandeur of
Malayalam much before the language was awarded classical status.

A number of poems written by Mr. Kurup were recited by various singers on
the occasion. Meanwhile, a different kind of Classical language Day
celebration was held at Sapphire Central School at Olavanna on Saturday.

The Malayalam Department of the School organised a workshop on
Ottanthullal, with an aim to create awareness on the traditional art forms
of the State among the students..

Kalamandalam Suresh Kaliyath and team performed ‘Kalyana Sougandhikam’ with
lecture demonstration much to the joy of the students who enjoyed the
slight taunts made by the dancers.
