JOHANNESBURG – Strict security measures are in place at the North West
University (NWU) <http://ewn.co.za/Topic/North-West-University>’s Mahikeng
campus where classes are expected to resume

this morning after the institution was closed for five weeks

University management suspended the academic programme last month after angry
students set alight the science building

and vandalised
property

.

They were unhappy with the inauguration of a new Student Representative
Council.

The university's Koos Degenaar says private security guards will be
deployed on campus this morning.

“We will have strong security on campus. We make use of a student card and
that card will have to be activated for any student to have access to the
university or to come to campus.”

He says students have indicated that they are eager to resume the academic
programme.

“I think the mood is positive and students have expressed a desire to
continue with their studies and save the first semester.”

Students moved in to residences under the strict supervision of security
guards yesterday.

The university says talks with the SRC will continue, to make sure there
are no more issues that could spark violence.
