Four UN ambassadors - from Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean, and South America -- will begin the discussion at this year's Symposium of the Study Group on Language and the United Nations, taking place in New York on Thursday and Friday, May 10 and 11, 2018. The topic, "Multilingualism in International Organizations and in International Co-operation," will bring together speakers from around the world and from various international organizations. The keynote address will be given by Michele Gazzola, specialist in the economics of language and author of the book The Evaluation of Language Régimes (John Benjamins 2014) and co-editor of The Economics of Language Policy (MIT Press 2016) and Language Policy and Linguistic Justice (Springer 2018).
Contributions to the symposium will examine such international organizations and programs as the European Union, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the International Criminal Court, UNESCO, ASEAN, the UN Development Programme, and the UN Department of Public Information. Papers will be presented by, among others, such scholars as Lisa McEntee-Atalianis (Birkbeck, University of London), Francis M. Hult (University of Lund), John Edwards (St. Francis Xavier University, Canada), Phindile Dlamini (University of Swaziland), Timothy Reagan (University of Maine), and Emmanuel Asonye (University of Mexico).
