On the Sweeping Supreme Court Decision That Led to Widespread High School
Censorship

As public schools across the United States face heightened censorship and
the threat of funding losses for noncompliance, school yearbooks remind us
that there is nothing new about political censorship in schools. A few rare
examples also reveal that there some students and educators always find
ways to circumvent expectations and policies...In the United States, the
censorship of school publications is nearly blamed on a 1988 Supreme Court
ruling, though the ruling simply codified a practice that was already well
established.
