What if AI interacted with a user in one language, but computed in the
background based on resources from another (e.g., English)? What if there
genuinely needed to be different responses in different languages, but AI
thought that was an error and corrected in one direction rather than the
other?
The Cagliari Statement on Linguistic and Conceptual Justice in AI
(accessible at https://sites.unica.it/ljs/cs/) addresses these and similar
issues. It’s a nice document for raising awareness, and I’m proud to have
contributed to it as a co-author. There is an opportunity for scholars and
practitioners to add your names in support, if you wish, and if you know
any developers who may benefit from the content, please share too.
Best,
Maya
