transcribing digitized recordings

I use a very simple and inexpensive software called CoolEdit - about $70 -
does amazing things, including digitizing regular audio tapes - and
facilitates transcribing because it's all on one screen (the actual
transcribing is in a Word file, but because it's on the computer the hand
movements are cut way down, making a footpedal unnecessary). See a trial
version at www.syntrillium.com

of mine has just bought a mini-disk digital recorder and is wondering how
she's going to transcribe her recordings.
