Anything going on?

Hey folks:

I am quite surprised to see this list so dormant this many weeks after the
new semester has begun! I know we've had a slew of people subscribe over the
last couple weeks, but I suspect they're all lurking waiting to see what's
the de facto protocol on this list before they pipe up. (BTW: welcome,
folks!)

In the past, whenever there's been a heated debate going on in political
circles, I've usually seen someone bring their some insights on the issue
based on conversational analysis, discourse analysis, or other forms of
analysis that highlight communicative and linguistic features.

So: what gives? Any interesting research going on? Any interesting
observations?

And for those who went to the field this summer, any interesting new
tidbits? [Yes, I hear echoes of Mrs. Fitzgerald asking me for my "what I did
on my summer vacation" essay.]

For me, I did get up to Nova Scotia & Cape Breton a bit and had fun nosing
about trying get some local understandings about Acadian and Gaelic
linguistic issues, ideological and grammatical. Anyone out there do work up
in that region?

-Richard
