Dean, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Northern Arizona University invites nominations and applications for the
position of Dean, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The
preferred start date for this position is July 1, 2007. Reporting to the
Provost, the Dean provides College leadership for instructional,
budgetary, personnel and curricular matters and is responsible for
university procedures and policies at the College level. NAU’s emphasis
on undergraduate education is enhanced by its graduate programs and
research as well as distance learning. The university is committed to a
diverse and civil working and learning environment.
Northern Arizona University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation in
2005 as RU/H: Research Universities (high research activity). We are a
large, comprehensive doctoral institution with a high undergraduate
population of primarily residential students. The University enrolls
over 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students on its main Flagstaff
campus, Yuma campus, and through its distance education programs. The
University offers 94 baccalaureate, 47 masters, and 8 doctoral degree
programs in arts, sciences, and professions, including 18 accredited
professional degrees and many certification programs. Over 70 of these
are delivered to students through 30+ facilities located throughout the
state and through Northern Arizona University’s online campus.
The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences is one of six colleges
within Northern Arizona University and has approximately 150 full-time
faculty. The College includes the Departments of Anthropology; Applied
Indigenous Studies; Criminal Justice; Geography, Planning and
Recreation; Political Science; Psychology; Sociology and Social Work;
and the School of Communication as well as several interdisciplinary
programs, including Ethnic Studies and Women’s Studies. The College also
includes a number of public service/research centers and institutes such
as the Institute for Human Development, the Institute for Native
Americans, the Social Research Laboratory, the Institute for Future
Workforce Development, and the Northern Arizona Regional Gerontology
Institute.
The College has over 3,200 undergraduate and nearly 300 graduate majors.
It participates significantly in serving NAU’s liberal studies and
diversity requirements and interdisciplinary programs. We offer 34 BA/BS
degrees, eight certificates, 10 degrees at the Master’s level, and a PhD
program in Political Science. The College has a strong commitment to
statewide delivery of programming to rural and under-served communities.
Flagstaff is located in a four-season, culturally rich community of
about 57,000 at the base of the majestic San Francisco Peaks with
opportunities for year-round outdoor activities.
Qualifications Required
The Dean must have an earned doctorate in a discipline within the
College’s broad areas of responsibility or a closely related field, a
demonstrated background in administration and leadership, a successful
and significant academic/scholarly or professional record of
accomplishment commensurate with appointment as a tenured professor, and
a minimum of three years of administrative experience.
Qualifications Desired
The successful candidate will also exhibit some combination of the
following characteristics:
• The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to working with a diverse
faculty, staff and student population as well as a commitment to
undergraduate and graduate education, faculty development, and scholarly
and creative activity.
• An established record of leadership and administrative responsibility
for academic programs, faculty, staff, and students in one or more of
the areas represented in the College
• Experience as department chair or director
• Support for shared governance and academic freedom, as well as
excellent listening and communication skills
• A record of excellence in academic pursuits and a demonstrated
commitment to interdisciplinary academic and professional programs,
including those that focus on diversity
• Significant classroom teaching experience, including an understanding
of the role of technology in teaching and program delivery
• An understanding of the important role of service in the university,
community and in the profession
• Demonstrated budget development and management skills
• Fund-raising capabilities and an awareness of major funding agencies,
foundations and granting programs supportive of the social and
behavioral sciences
• A commitment to diversity and affirmative action
