I’ve used Audacity to convert analog to digital files with an external audiocassette player plugged into my Mac and it works well. These days, good luck finding an audiocassette player!
I’ve only edited a couple of digital files using Audacity, but like Niko find that it’s quite user friendly.

This Label-track can be exported, and as a simple text file it can be searched, but also imported to other programs (I personally often take them to ELAN as a new tier).

One has to save the file in Audacity as an Audacity Project file, and the large size of those files is one minus I've encountered with it. Edited tracks can easily be exported to different formats etc.
