Piers, what browser do you use? Mine (e.g. I just tried Chrome, but also Safari) don’t have that download option. I would be glad to switch if I knew what to switch to.

Actually, these days you can download directly from YouTube without using an add-on. Underneath the title of the video and to the right of the 'Subscribe' button is a 'Download' button.
