Dear Leila and all,
I wanted to let everyone know that the best place on Facebook to go to find
tributes to Barney is not his personal page, as above, but a new page
called Remembering Barney Bate. Searching on FB for the latter will lead
you there.
https://www.facebook.com/rememberingBarneyBate/
We are all reeling in shock and sorry. As not only a fellow linguistic
anthropologist (from a shared Chicago lineage as well), but as someone who
got to enjoy Barney's company on an almost daily basis here at the Stanford
Humanities Center this year, I can say that we are all grief-stricken at
the loss of someone so tremendously vibrant, curious, generous, and in love
with life. He was so excited about his new book - in the thick of writing
it, with all that entailed: joy, frustration, and deep enthused engagement.
It is such a dreadful, awful loss.
Yours,
Kelda Jamison
