[Linganth] AAA Call for papers: Language and the economy of food

Hi everyone,

We are seeking participants for a panel that explores the intersection of language, food and moral economies. We are interested in the way that talk (in concert with other semiotic practices) about food and talk that accompanies acts of food consumption maps on to moral/evaluative regimes.
Papers may explore how discourses about food and food practices are mobilized to delineate and morally evaluate social groups that produce and/or consume particular foods. These discourses could be associated, for example, with the regulation of food and food industries, the commercialization of culturally specific products/cuisines, institutional accommodations to dietary practices, or the ranking of foods, ingredients, methods of preparation/commercialization/presentation
of food in restaurants, cooking shows etc. Other possible paper topics include various mappings of the social onto the eating body; how language is implicated in the regulation of eating as a practice (either in restricting or controlling food intake or encouraging “indulgence”); the discursive construction of foods as “healthy/unhealthy”
etc.
