[Linganth] short accessible pieces on language in current issues

Happy summer all!

As I start to think about fall teaching, I'm looking for articles for the
first week of my Intro to Linguistic Anthropology course. I'd like to
assign a handful of short pieces written for a general audience that
highlight the importance of language/semiotic analysis for current issues,
which can then be touchstone examples to come back to throughout the course.

I'm involved with the SLA Committee on Language and Social Justice, so have
access to their work on issues such as the "word gap", the i-word, and
Native American mascots. But I'd really welcome suggestions for any other
pieces.

If I get a good set of responses, I'll compile a list and send it out to
everyone.

Thanks!
