I am seeking paper proposals for an organized session for the upcoming AAA meetings in Washington, DC (Nov 29 - Dec 3) on the topic of 'New Directions in Language, Culture and Cognition'. Feel free to distribute widely.

Organizer: Stephen Chrisomalis

This panel addresses the complex relationship between culture, language, and cognition from a diverse range of subdisciplinary and theoretical perspectives. From conceptual metaphor theory to linguistic relativity to cultural models to cross-linguistic perspectives on space and time, there are a variety of loci where linguistic and cognitive perspectives in anthropology (broadly construed) are tightly interwoven. Yet there is also a perception of a disjunct between the two. Keane (2015) and many other commenters on Maurice Bloch's Anthropology and the cognitive challenge (2012) note that there are missed opportunities, threads of research less than fully integrated with one another, and a need for mutual interest. This panel aims to take a step in this direction by inviting contributions that seek to expand our prototypical understandings of the language-culture-cognition intersection, from a variety of theoretical and empirical frameworks. Contributions from both senior and junior scholars, including students, are welcome, and contributions from anthropologists from groups underrepresented in the academy are encouraged.

Interested presenters should submit an abstract to chrisomalis at wayne.edu<mailto:chrisomalis at wayne.edu> by April 1. Feel free to email with any inquiries.
Cheers,
