Subject: [SAS] Portland SAS / SfAA meetings - Panel looking for participants

Hi all,

I am hoping to put together a panel for the Spring (Portland) SAS meetings on the topic of Linguistic Methods in Cognitive Anthropology. If you are interested, please email me at chrisomalis at wayne.edu<mailto:chrisomalis at wayne.edu>.

Roughly speaking, I am for panelists to discuss specifically linguistic methods within cognitive anthropology. In the 60s and 70s ethnosemantic / ethnoscientific approaches were always both cultural and linguistic in focus, and in the early days of cultural models (e.g. Holland and Quinn's Cultural models in language and thought) this was also explicit, but contemporary linguistic anthropologists more rarely use specifically cognitive frameworks. What can we do now with linguistic data that enhances theory and knowledge-building in cognitive anthropology? Presenters might focus on any of the following (or other pertinent approaches): lexical semantics, pragmatics and cognition, conceptual metaphor, corpus linguistics, schema approaches to conversation / discourse, narratives and cognition.

Feel free to distribute to your students or to anyone else who might be interested but is not on this email list. Students, early-career scholars, and persons from groups underrepresented in the academy are particularly welcome.

Cheers,
