Just a note on The Linguists, these fellows are doing a sort of “salvage” linguistics that makes me very uncomfortable, portrayed as the Great White Hope sort of figure in the film. I use it, but with critique and caveats. I also have a colleague who works with speakers of an endangered language in the Amazon basin – he indicates that local experience where “The Linguists” showed up was not exactly positive.

Hello Michael,
Rising Voices / Hótȟaŋiŋpi is about Lakota language revitalization. It is available on Youtube and on DVD. I do not know if Spanish subtitles are available. https://risingvoicesfilm.com/watch-full-film/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Frisingvoicesfilm.com%2Fwatch-full-film%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cpinej%40wwu.edu%7Cfc82584f0f704bd3a0ce08d691d797f2%7Cdc46140ce26f43efb0ae00f257f478ff%7C0%7C0%7C636856752490566315&sdata=WzcI6WCw0vA0XMsG0nj71uBG7toxgQf%2BizKhixciJoI%3D&reserved=0>
A couple others: The Linguists, 2008 (though it centers the linguists themselves more than the communities); Living Quechua, 2014 (have not seen this: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3773766/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.imdb.com%2Ftitle%2Ftt3773766%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cpinej%40wwu.edu%7Cfc82584f0f704bd3a0ce08d691d797f2%7Cdc46140ce26f43efb0ae00f257f478ff%7C0%7C0%7C636856752490576320&sdata=OHVLYQrdK7z9X7lF8dRIci15IgxT3wMqh3APEJrO%2Fyw%3D&reserved=0>); Keep Talking, 2017 (about Alutiiq, also have not seen it: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4006526/<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.imdb.com%2Ftitle%2Ftt4006526%2F&data=02%7C01%7Cpinej%40wwu.edu%7Cfc82584f0f704bd3a0ce08d691d797f2%7Cdc46140ce26f43efb0ae00f257f478ff%7C0%7C0%7C636856752490586325&sdata=ZGyS%2FYGalj7s3upeQ31LoOkkztYji6BilGJHjzrmdsw%3D&reserved=0>). I recall seeing advertised a Latin American fictional film in the last couple of years that had strong heritage language themes, but I could not find where to see it, and I cannot find it now.
Good luck!
Paul

Subject: [Linganth] films on indigenous languages?
Hello,
I am wondering if anyone can recommend a film or films that highlight the struggle or work for language revitalization among indigenous peoples? Or the relation of language to daily life.... We are looking for films that are appropriate for a Spanish speaking audience (subtitles are fine). Our Visual Anthropology program wants to host a festival and event about indigenous languages here at the University. Thanks for your help! Abrazos, Michael
