SLA Section News Co-Editor for Anthropology News
Anthropology News (AN) is the American Anthropological Association’s (AAA) award-wining member magazine, published bimonthly in print and continually on the AN website<https://anthropology-news.org/>. The section column co-editors work together to solicit, provide editorial feedback on, and publish four quarterly columns each year. The section columns of AN publish essays (magazine-style anthropology stories), photo essays, or interviews grounded in interesting research or current events or debates within the discipline related to the section’s area of expertise, and timely news about goings-on in a section. Section editors review pitches from section members to determine if they are interested in developing them and if the pitches are a good fit for Anthropology News. They then provide developmental feedback, recommendations for revision (structure, clarity of argument, style), and copy edits during the editorial process. Section editors are responsible for submitting final pieces via an online submission form and working with AN’s Chief Editor and Publishing Assistant to finalize publication. Published pieces appear on the Anthropology News website and are promoted via the Anthropology News Twitter account @news4anthros<https://twitter.com/news4anthros> (+28k followers) and AAA social media, and via the bimonthly website content update email circulated to all AAA members. As members of the SLA extended board, SLA Anthropology News Co-Editors receive an annual stipend of $250 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.
SLA Digital Media Director
The SLA Digital Media Director is responsible for updating the SLA website as needed, sending out periodic announcements on the SLA listserv, archiving announcements/news on the SLA website, and helping JLA editors with media content as needed. In addition to working closely with the SLA Digital Assistant to expand the SLA’s social media presence, the SLA Digitial Media Director recruits content writers for the SLA blog—working with content authors, co-editing blog posts, adding finished posts to the SLA website, and advertising new posts to SLA membership. As a member of the SLA extended board, the SLA Digital Media Director receives an annual stipend of $250 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.
SLA Nominations Committee Member
The SLA nominations committee organizes candidate slates for elected leadership positions in our organization. The nominations committee maintains communication with the section president regarding position openings and the identifying and recruiting of candidates for open appointed positions. The committee formulates position descriptions for interested candidates. The committee works with the AAA staff to see that ballots and candidate slates meet AAA guidelines. As members of the SLA extended board, members of the SLA Nominations Committee receive an annual stipend of $250 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.
SLA Section Program Editor (otherwise known as the SLA Program Chair)
The SLA Section Program Editor is responsible for building the program for Society for Linguistic Anthropology’s contributions to the AAA Annual Meetings in the fall. It is an excellent position for SLA members interested in fostering, overseeing, and supporting cutting edge research in the field. Duties include working with the SLA Executive Board to inform the SLA membership and linguistic anthropology community about upcoming deadlines, soliciting and/or selecting submitted Invited Panels for the sub-section, coordinating a committee to review submitted panels, and organizing individual papers into panels to be reviewed. As the AAA program offerings have adapted to the ongoing global pandemic, this position has also included work coordinating the SLA contribution to online events like “Raising Our Voices” in 2020. In normal years, most of the work for program chairs takes place between late April/early May and June/July (the period between abstract submission and notification of outcome), though the timing may shift if pandemic adaptations continue. As a member of the SLA extended board, the SLA Program Chair receives an annual stipend of $250 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.
