Dear Graduate Students,
Please join us for our first session in a series of workshops geared
specifically towards graduate students! Please feel free to circulate this
with your colleagues and peers.
*“Ethnographic Discourse Analysis: A Graduate Student Workshop” *with
Associate Professor of Anthropology, Jennifer Roth-Gordon from the
University of Arizona will take place on *Friday, May 9th, at 2:30-4:30PM
EST. *Register here for the Zoom link! <https://forms.gle/mtKtGpy4znq7wEi1A>
This workshop offers a fast-paced introduction to “ethnographic discourse
analysis,” the analysis of discourse and linguistic features with close
attention paid to interactional, ethnographic, and sociopolitical contexts.
Professor Roth-Gordon will illustrate how students working with a wide
range of data (from social media, interviews, everyday conversations, or
written texts) can apply some of the analytic tools offered by Goffman and
Bakhtin, including participant roles, footing shifts, frames, stance,
register, genre, intertextuality, and voicing. Note that we will focus on
how to conduct linguistic analysis rather than on ethnographic methods of
data collection.

See you all soon!
Warmly,
Your SLA grad student reps, Noelia and Nikolina
