Dear LingAnth List,

I'm writing to announce the publication of a new textbook, *Language and
Social Issues: An Investigator's Toolkit*, written by myself, Mary-Caitlyn
Valentinsson, Shiloh Drake, and Amy Fountain. Designed for
novice students exploring language from a variety of disciplinary lenses,
the book starts with chapters that attune readers to the fascinating
elements of language around them in their everyday lives, provides a broad
overview of linguistics and the structural components of language, and
reviews key data collection methodologies and ethics issues in research. It
then turns to a chapter-by-chapter discussion of the intersections between
language and various sociocultural topics, such as language/cultural
contact, socialization and development, AI/technology, education, the labor
market, gender/sexuality, and geopolitical conflicts. We have a range of
group and individual activities at the end of each chapter to support
classroom engagement, and (if I can forego professional humility for a
moment), is also very funny and engaging in a way students will definitely
enjoy :)

While it definitely leans more towards (socio)linguistics, it would be a
great resource for linguistic anthropology courses as well!

Please check it out and consider adopting it for your summer/fall 2026
courses.
