General Meeting Update

   1.

Changes in the SLA Bylaws in Support of Initiatives, Activities, and
   Statements

At our recent general meeting, we were joined by SLA’s Kathryn Graber and
Erika Hoffman (current President-Elect of SLA), who walked us through
recent changes to SLA’s bylaws. These updates provide members with a
clearer, more formal pathway to contribute to SLA and LSJ’s mission while
adhering to SLA and AAA guidelines. The changes are expected to facilitate
our ongoing work, activities, initiatives, and provide a pathway for the
issuance of public statements. More details will be discussed at an
upcoming SLA Town Hall Meeting, open to all SLA and LSJ members, which is
set to take place mid-April (email to follow soon).

   2.

   Call for Membership (2026–2027)

We are currently accepting applications for LSJ membership for the
2026–2027 term. We are seeking new members to continue the important legacy
and work established by LSJ’s founders and contributors.

LSJ is an integral part of SLA—a task force committee dedicated to issues
of language and social justice, which are central to the work of linguistic
anthropologists.

Membership includes a three-year commitment involving:

   -

Monthly meetings during the academic semester (excluding summer and
   winter)
   -

Participation in one general meeting per semester
   -

Active involvement within an existing initiative—or the opportunity to
   propose a new initiative

Initiatives are intended to advance both our internal work and
public-facing efforts on language and social justice. Past projects have
included:

   -

Producing a book on language and social justice
   -

Expanding accessibility resources for SLA meetings
   -

Building research collaborations (e.g., “Demystifying Language”)
   -

Issuing public statements and open letters on pressing social issues

New initiatives can also be smaller in scope and achievable within a single
semester. Examples include:

   -

Crowdsourcing teaching materials on language, culture, or anthropology
   -

Surveying how communities celebrate International Mother Language Day
(we have a current task force producing this work)
   -

Holding online events, like a special interest Reading Group or Research
   Talk.

If your research aligns with LSJ’s goals and values and you are interested
in engaging in collaborative social justice work for SLA, we encourage you
to apply.

Please note: The current call for membership closes on May 1st, 2026.
Please email Dr. Katherine Morales (katherineravenna at gmail.com) for more
information.

We hope you have a great weekend. We will follow up on individual
initiatives in upcoming emails.

Best,

Dr. Katherine Morales (on behalf of LSJ Committee)
