Dear Linguistic Anthropologists,
The Society for Linguistic Anthropology (SLA) is still seeking nominees for
the role of SLA Program Chair. This three-year commitment (May 2026 – May
2029) begins with a one-year term as "Program Chair-Elect," which gives the
newly elected person the opportunity to shadow the current Program Chair
and ensures a smooth transition.
The Program Chair is responsible for building SLA’s programming and
contributions to the American Anthropological Association’s (AAA) Annual
Meetings. This is a wonderful opportunity for someone who is interested in
fostering, overseeing, and supporting cutting edge research in the field.
The key responsibilities of the position entail:
-
Working with the SLA Executive Board to inform the SLA membership and
linguistic anthropology community about upcoming deadlines
-
Soliciting and/or selecting submitted Invited Panels for the sub-section
-
Coordinating a committee to review submitted panels
-
Organizing individual papers into panels
As a member of the SLA extended board, the SLA Program Chair receives an
annual stipend of $250 toward attending the AAA annual meeting.
For self-nominations, the process is easy: simply email us your name, an
updated CV, and a short paragraph about why you are interested in the
position, what you could contribute, and whether you have any related
experience.
For nominating a colleague, please check with them first to confirm their
interest and then email us their name and email address. We will then reach
out to them directly to request materials.
Please send materials to cyin at carleton.edu, chune at mailbox.sc.edu, and
zuckermc at bc.edu with the subject “SLA Program Chair” by Friday, April 3.
Thank you for considering this SLA service opportunity!
All the best,
SLA Nominations Committee
Cheryl Yin, Elaine Chun, and Charles Zuckerman
