Doctoral fellowship in linguistics: Language typology

The Department of Linguistics at the Max Planck Institute for
Evolutionary Anthropology (Leipzig, Germany) seeks
candidates for a doctoral fellowship in linguistics. The fellowship is
for three years (2009-2012).

The dissertation research should be in the area of language typology,
with particular emphasis on the typology of verbal valency classes. It
will be carried out in the context of a project on valency classes in
the world's languages (see
http://email.eva.mpg.de/~haspelmt/Ditransitive.html).

The doctoral fellow should already have an MA in Linguistics or an
equivalent qualification, and be either registered or
qualified to register in a recognized doctoral program at a university
or equivalent degree-awarding institution. (The MPI for Evolutionary
Anthropology does not award degrees.) Applicants should have previous
experience in language typology (experience in statistical methods and
handling of databases is desirable). Good knowledge of English is required.

Except for approved absences (e.g. fieldwork, conferences, vacation),
the place of work is Leipzig. The fellowship is
available from 1 September 2009. We will start reviewing applications on
18 May.

Applicants should send a CV, a statement of research interests, and a
sample of written work (such as the M.A. thesis or a research article) to:
